In the year 1831 George W. Armstrong, accompanied by his mother, Mrs. Elsa S. Armstrong, became the first settler in this township, and he was one of the vital and influential citizens of the county for many years. Other early settlers were John Drain, Dr. Frederick Graham, Levi Jennings, Eldridge G. Clark, William H. Goddard (a dentist), Richard Edgecomb, Rev. George Marsh, George S. Maxon, Asa Lewis, Isaac Gage, Gershom Burr, Reese Ridgeway, Stephen G. Hicks, Peter Consols, John Wilcox, Guy Dudley, Captain Tylee and Oliver H. Sigler.

The township was organized April 2, 1850, and the first election gave the following results: Supervisor, George S. Maxon; clerk, George Marsh; assessor, Isaac Gage; collector, D. Reed; highway Commissioners, M. Gage, F. S. Maxon and Stephen Jennings; justices of the peace, P. S. Blanchard and M. D. Smith ; constables, R. E. Edgecomb and S. M. Rogers.
