In the western tier of townships, Dimmick Township is one of special importance in population and wealth, and through it flows the Little Vermilion River and the Tomahawk, its principal tributary. The township was named in honor of its first settler, Daniel Dimmick, who here established his home in the year 1836, other early settlers having been Jarvis Swift, Elijah Tibballs, Richard Tibballs, Henry Swift, Lyman Swift, Albert Swift, Garret Fitzgerald, and Josiah Clingman.

The township was organized under the provisions of the general law of 1849, and the personnel of its first official corps was as follows: Supervisor, William Mitchell; clerk, Thomas W. Hennessey; assessor, Elijah Dimmick; collector, Luke W. Clark; overseer of the poor, John Taylor; highway commissioners, Josephus Dimmick, Herman Nisley, James L. Felton; justices of the peace,. John B. Long, Luke W. Clark; constables, John Florence, Abram Long. The little post village of Dimmick was platted in 1873, by Luke Doyle, and is a station on the Illinios Central Railroad.
