The earliest settlements within the borders of this township were made along the course of the Vermilion River.
In that part of the township John Coleman, from Richiand County, Ohio, settled in the year 1831, and other pioneers
who came in that year were Henry Cramer, John Holderman (who was the first settler), and Daniel Barrackman. Within
the ‘30s came also John Wood, David Reeder, Jacob Goff, the four Downey brothers (Thomas, John, Elza and James),
George Tillsbury, Charles Clifford, Jacob Dice, Stephen Faro, Isaac Thorp, Hiram Divine, Chester Naramoor, and
Jacob Moon.
Eagle Township was organized April 2, 1850, and the first township officers were as here noted: Supervisor, Elijah
M. Galloway; clerk, George R. Belford; assessor, John Karns; collector, Hugh Connor; overseer of the poor, Robert
McQuown; highway commissioners, George G. Tilbury, Charles L. Hoffman, Jr., Luke Conness; justices of the peace,
Francis Galloway, Barney O'Neill; constables, Walter D. Pope, Jeifry Conness.
In Eagle Township the Hamlet of Munster is a station on the Chicago & Alton Railroad. The City of Streator
is the principal trading point for the citizens of this township.
