Duer, Barton E., East Hamburg, p. o. Orchard Park, was born at Black Rock, Erie county, N. Y., October 2, 1832,
and came to East Hamburg with his parents when six months old. His education was obtained in the common schools,
and he together with his eldest son are among the successful farmers of the town. July 5, 1856, he married Sarah
A. Frick of this county, and they had four children: Merrill F., William (who died at the age of five months),
Blanche (who 'died in her second year) and Mabel V., who has taught school and is now a student in the State Normal'
of Buffalo. Merrill F. married Eva E. Duel and they have two children, Byron E. and Edith M. Mr. Duer's father,
William Duer, was born in Schoharie county in 1798 and came to Buffalo with his parents in 1809 and later to Black
Rock in 1812. He was a soldier in the war of 1812, running away at the age of fourteen; he was in the battle of
Lundy's Lane and honorably discharged at the close of the war. He married Betsey Zimmerman and they had six children:
Catherine M. (died young), Elizabeth, Harriet C. (died young), Barton E. (as above), Helen M. and John W. Mr. Duer
died in 1876 and his widow in 1895. Mrs. Duer's father, Martin Frick, was born in Pennsylvania in 1808 and came
to Erie county when a young man. He married Catherine Miller and they had ten children, two died in infancy and
eight survived: Susan, Joseph, Barbara, Martin, Sarah A., Daniel, Catherine and Edward. Mr. Frick died in 1884.
and his widow died just six weeks later.
