J. Prescott Hawks, born in Geneva, October 2, 1833, is a son of Porter and Sophia (Prescott) Hawks, natives
respectively of Deerfleld, Mass., and Phelps, N. Y. Porter Hawks was born July 4. 1804, and died August 7, 1841.
He was a merchant in Geneva until his death. He left four children, viz.: J. Prescott, Caroline Sayre, Henry, of
Galva, Ill., and Harriet. Mrs. Sophia (Prescott) Hawks married for her second husband James B. Darrow, by whom
she had three children, James P., George M.., and Mary S. Compson. The grandfather of J. Prescott was a doctor
at Phelps, N. Y. J. Prescott Hawks remained in Geneva until the age of 12 years, when he came to Roanoke, where
he was educated, and removed to Pavilion in 1864. He married, March 8, 1855, Amanda A., daughter of Marcus and
Margaret (Hamilton) Mason. They have four children, Fred P., Helen H. Pinney, Carrie M. Sampson, and Stella.
