John Bean, a native of Vermont, came to Stafford in 1810, resided there a few years, and finally settled in
Byron. He was an extensive trader, owned much live stock and real estate near South Byron, and was engaged in dealing
in live stock for the Boston market. After the completion of the railroad he built a store house and dealt largely
in grain and general merchandise. With all his large transactions he was regarded as being strictly honest, liberal
to the poor, and a strict observer of the Sabbath. He died in 1883, aged 84 years. His son has been a station agent
since 1858, and was also a merchant at one time.
