John J. Ellis, son of Chester and Elizabeth (Smith) Ellis, was born in Bath, Steuben County, August 24, 1854, received his education in the common schools and at the academy, and taught school when 17 years of age. He then went into the railroad office at Bath, and has been in the employ of the Erie Railroad since. In 1874 he was placed in charge of Darien station. He also deals in farm produce and agricultural implements. In politics he is a Republican, and has the confidence of his townsmen, who elected him supervisor in 1885-86. He is a man of excellent business ability. October 20, 1875, he married Matilda J. Spann, of Attica, a lady of culture and refinement.
