John Griswold, son of Lott K., was born in Bennington, N. Y., and was early taught industrious habits on his
father's farm, and had only a common school education. November 17, 1846, he married Rachel Osborne, and settled
on a farm in the south part of Darien. In 1870 he removed to the place where he now resides, near the village of
Darien. He has always been a farmer. He cast his first vote with the Whig party, and in 1856 voted for John C.
Fremont for President. Since then he has served the Republican party. Like his brother he commenced poor and has
earned what he has, both in property and reputation. He has filled acceptably the office of overseer of the poor
11 years, and now, at about the age of 70, has an excellent character for integrity and. fair dealing. He has three
sons and one daughter.
