Silas W. Knight served in the late war in Co. H, 78th N. Y. Inf., for three years, and was honorably discharged at Baltimore Hospital for disability in January, 1863. He was in the battles of Harper's Ferry, Winchester, and Cedar Mountain. The grandfather of Mrs. Silas W. Knight (Samuel Ames) served in the war of the Revolution, and her grandfather Hulett was an eminent physician in Connecticut, and was an early practitioner in Byron.
