Jay Lathrop, born in Stafford in 1840, was the eldest son of John and Elizabeth Lathrop, who settled in 1814,
coming from Rutland County, Vt. They did much towards the settlement of the town. Mr. Lathrop received a good,
practical, common school education, and at the age of 24, with his brother Howard, worked the home farm On shares.
Five years later he became the sole owner of the homestead. In 1883 Mr. Lathrop was elected town supervisor by
a very large majority, and again in 1888 and 1889 he filled the same office. He married, in 1872, Mina, third daughter
of Abram Warner, by whom he has a daughter, Florence, who was born in 1875. Mr. Lathrop's father lived to the age
of 92 years.
