Barnes, George W., was born in the town of Chariton, May 22, 1856, a son of James and Eliza (Ellerd) Barnes.
His father came to this country when a young man, and in the eariy years of his life carried on the shoemakefs
frade, but in his latter years carried on farming exclusively; he died in 1861. George W. Barnes was educated in
the common schools of the towns of Chariton and Gaiway and when fourteen years of age started out in life for himself
as a farm laborer. In 1888 he purchased the farm where he now resides and by occupation follows general farming.
February 13, 1878, he married Elizabeth, daughter of James Gray, and their children are Lillian, William, Frederick,
Robert, Nellie, Stephen and Myrtle. George W. is a public spirited man and is active in school and town and county
affairs. He is a member of the Patrons of Industry, and of the West Milton church.
