Brown, Alpheus, was born in Whitehall, Washington county, N. Y., January 9, 1853, a son of Dennis and Charlotte
(Prior) Brown. Dennis Brown was a farmer and lived at Whitehall. He was a Republican and was assessor of the town
and held other minor offices. He died in 1867, and his wife is now living in Stillwater. Alpheus Brown was educated
in the common schools. His father died when he was sixteen years old and he took charge of the family and has made
his own, way in life. In 1878 he came to Hadley and worked at the woodenware works three years. He married Mary
Jenkings, and they have one son. George, born March 5, 1884. Mr. Brown owns seventy-five acres of land where he
lives and 150 acres elsewhere. He follows general farming and is one of the leading farmers of his town.
