The history of this township is largely centered in the beautiful City of Mendota, of which specific mention is made in another chapter of this work. In the early days this fine prairie township failed to draw many settlers, the pioneers preferring to locate in nearer proximity to timbered tracts. The year 1840 recorded a few settlements here, and following years gave minor increase in settlement. In 1848 Charles Foster settled on section 34, and in the following year Bela and William Bowen came here from the State of New York. Other early settlers were Philip Rogers, and Hugh and Owen Murphy.

Mendota Township, originally a part of Meriden Township, was set off and organized in the spring of 1856, and its first officials were as here designated: Supervisor, John H. Harris; clerk, S. M. Moore; assessor, Philo Castle; collector, Stephen Aldrich; overseer of the poor, D. G. Bly; constable, Cyrus Kreitzer; road commissioners, George McCormick, Jacob L. Eckert, P. B. Rust. The City of Mendota initiated its period of splendid growth and development with the coming of the Illinois Central and the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy railroads. Reference should be made to the record concerning this fine city in another chapter of this volume.
