Barber, Henry S.-One of the foremost and best known farmers in Jefferson county is Henry S. Barber, born in
the town of Le Ray, N. Y., July 22, 1831. He received his education in the district schools and the academy at
Evans Mills. On leaving school he was apprenticed at the carpenter's trade and in this he received a training and
gained a practical experience in his trade such as is rarely obtained. After serving histime and becoming an expert
journeyman carpenter and joiner, Mr. Barber, in pursuance of his design in perfecting himself at his trade, engaged
in building on his own account and for others and continued the same until 1860. At the end of this time he bought
a farm and has since then been engaged in dairying and farming. In 1887 he removed to Los Angeles, Cal., where
he remained for two years, when he returned east and located in Watertown and after a few years removed to the
farm where he now resides. August 22, 1860, he married Mary M. Edwards, and they have four children: George W.,
Mrs. Col. A. G. Judson, who resides in Washington, D. C., John Edward and Mary Bell. Mr. Barber attributes his
success to his own patient, methodical habits, punctuality, thrift and unceasing attention to business at all times.
He is an estimable citizen and a model of homely virtues.
