Bergevin, John E., was born in St. Martin, Quebec, September 9, 1844. His parents removed to the town of Rutland,
Jefferson county, N. Y., in 1850, where he received his education from the district schools. His first business
experience was as a clerk in Watertown, and in 1862 he accepted a position with John M. Carpenter where he remained
until 1867 and then became a member of the firm of Carpenter & Bergevin; in 1893 the firm was succeeded by
the present firm of Bergevin, Carpenter & Co., dealers in general merchandise. Mr. Bergevin was married to
Elise M., daughter of Philippe Barron, a native of Switzerland. Mr. Bergevin has served on the Board of Aldermen,
and as chief of the fire department two years and on the Board of Supervisors; he is now on the Board of Health.
