Bowles, John, was born in Oxfordshire, England, Jannary 22, 1840, and came to the United States with his parents,
who located in Jefferson county, N. Y., in the year 1851. He was educated in the district schools and Watertown
High school and is a thorough farmer. Mr. Bowles is a member of Brownville Lodge No. 53, F. & A. M., and the
fami1y is of English origin on both sides. His father, William Bowles, was born at the old home in England, August
3, 1816; he was a ship carpenter and the last years of his life were spent as a farmer. He married Mary Fawdrey
of hs native place and they had five children: Anna M., Eliza, John, Levi, and Mary B. Anna M. married Marcus Taylor;
Eliza married William N. Reeves and Levi married Mary J. Harris. All of the daughters have been very successful
teachers for many years. Mary resides with her brother John. William Bowles died October 8, 1887, and his widow
January 20, 1896.
